REVITALIZATION AND EXTENSION BUILDINGS FOR HISTORICAL CASTLE COMPLEX IN SCHESSLITZ (GER), 2009

The history of the Giechburg fortress and of the mountain ridge on which it stands can be traced back until the Neolithic Era. Celtic settlements, a field of burial mounds of the Halstatt period below the fortress, first fortifications from the period of migration of peoples until the construction of the medieval castle (probably in the 10th century) are evidence of a history of intense use. Initially used as a stronghold, in part also as a safe location for the treasure of the dome of Bamberg during the Hussite wars, the complex looses in importance in the wake of quarrels among its heirs.

With the reconstruction as a renaissance-style castle around 1600, the fortress goes through a revival period, however without military significance, and is used as a hunting castle by the prince-bishops. In the context of the secularisation in the 19th century, the property is sold and starts dilapidating. Since 1971 the district of Bamberg has been the owner of the ruin and, after first partial reconstructions, is looking for a new concept for the economic and cultural survival of the complex.

The approach of ART DE LUX includes the reconstruction of the three-winged Renaissance building, extending the northern and southern wings and creating a museum gallery on the upper floor connecting all areas with each other. This will create a barrier-free circuit on the outside, the bridge connecting the fortified tower to the northern wing will be rebuilt and connect to the gallery and a multifunctional hall. Celtic and medieval cultural elements will be intentionally mixed and re-interpreted.

The restaurant in the western wing will be restructured and a large exhibition hall created above it. This will connect to a new gate house above the main entrance which will lead over to the "tour of senses" in the southern wing. Here, old crafts will be cultivated (book art, instrument building, weaving, etc.) which can be watched from a gallery.

The supplements will be created using historical materials and building methods, contributing the the harmonious overall appearance. Only at second glance is the visitor supposed to not the difference between the old and the new.
